I decided to take up photography, so that I could balance my life a little more and show the beauty that nature has provided to us all. In June of 2015, I began this endeavor by venturing out on my first landscape field photography experience.
Now, remember, I said that I was just starting out at this time and this was the first time I was going to be using my camera and the rest of the gear that came with it. The field photography that I was going to be doing at that time was on a mountain in Patagonia, and I had never walked too far in my entire life. Yet, there I was, planning on trekking up the side of a mountain with my camera and all my gear to take some pictures.
You all might be thinking that I was crazy to even attempt something like that, but I was excited about testing not only my physical stamina and endurance, but my mind as well. I have always felt that any challenge can be achieved when a person uses their mind in a powerful and determined way.
My journey began in the early morning and continued until very late in the evening each day and there was not much downtime in between. The trails in Patagonia are difficult and yet, they allow people to learn important lessons while they are hiking along them. During my time on the trails, I learned to slow down and appreciate what was around me. I learned to look at the smallest details of a flower, listen for the sounds of a bird waiting to be photographed in the trees, and watch for things that I never knew existed.
At the same time, I persevered and continued hiking along the trails, never even considering giving up and going home. I discovered that this trail could represent my life or the life of others and that the only way to achieve anything is to keep trekking on. The more you move forward, the further ahead you get, no matter what you are doing.
This is a simple lesson, yet not many people have mastered it in their lives. There is not a dream out there that is too crazy and you can achieve any dream that you have as long as you persevere and keep moving forward. It may not be easy, but the results can be life changing and quite rewarding.
Once I reached the top of the mountain, I saw that I would have missed some magnificent views if I had not stepped out of my comfort zone. That realization has continued to help me with different challenges in my life, because I now know that I could miss something fantastic if I do not allow myself to see the bigger picture in all that I do.
